Smile! No Bullying: On the Buses

The Smile! No Bullying Project, Nottingham Mencap and Nottingham City Transport have been working together to create a new DVD.

The DVD will be used to train new bus drivers and help them understand what it means to have a learning disability.

The DVD was filmed in the City Centre and on the Victoria Embankment. 25 people from Nottingham Mencap featured in the DVD, including Partnership Board Self-Advocate Roger Grange, who played a bus driver!

Kirsty Mills, the Smile! No Bullying Worker, said all of the people in the DVD have had problems on the buses in the past.

BBC East Midlands Today came to do a special report on the filming. They have given us kind permission to show the news report here.

Big Health Day 2010

The second Big Health Day was on on 27th May at Trent Vineyard.

Lots of people came to discuss what they think of health services. The organisers of the Big Health Day wanted to know if health services in Nottingham were good at supporting people with learning disabilities.

There have been lots of changes since last year. There is now the Acute Liaison Team at the hospitals. This is a team of specialist learning disability nurses who can help to support patients who have a learning disability. There is also a team of Health Facilitators who support people to use primary care services (things like GPs, Dentists and Health Centres).

A group of people from Speaking Up did a performance and there was a video diary room for people to have their say.

People watched presentations and then voted to say what they thought of Health Services. It was a good event and is helping to make health services better.

Bye Bye Martin!

Monday 10th August marked the last Partnership Board Meeting for Martin Jackaman. Martin will be retiring at the start of September. He has been a member of the Nottingham City Learning Disability Partnership Board since it started.

There was a delicious buffet lunch before the meeting, followed by speeches from members of the board. Everyone thanked Martin for the things he has done. Martin, who has worked in social care for nearly 40 years, gave a speech about his career. It showed just how much has improved over the years.

Once again we'd like to thank Martin for everything he has done over the years. We will all miss him! Thank you Martin!
